Comprehension Strategies

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’m looking forteaching Comprehension Strategies/metacognition for multi-level students. For example, let’s say you were focusing on teaching the skill of inferencing. There would be similar stories/black line masters about a similar theme on 1st-2nd grade level, 3rd-4th-grade level, and 5th-6th-grade level. You could do an into on the same topic and then have the kids do practice at their reading level for special education classrooms who have various reading ability levels It would save me a lot of time. If I had this then perhaps I could move faster without dumbing down the level to the lowest kid.. Does something like this exist? Of course it would be nice if there were some multi-sensory activities to go along with the themes. I would really like to know if such a book is out there? Suggestions please.

The Jamestown Comprehension Skills series might by what you are looking for. They have workbooks on making inferences, for example, at elementary and middle school and high school reading levels. I don’t think the topics are the same at each level, though.

My suggestion is to order a catalog, as it has sample pages. Website is http://www.glencoe.com/gln/jamestown/reading_skills/comprehension_skills.php

Michelle,

I have never heard of a comprehension program that had the same story at various reading levels. I have always used Specific Skill Series for teaching those concepts, but I’ll never use a comprehension program again without taking the kids all the way through Visualizing and Verbalizing first.

Michele, I am a resource teacher in AZ too and saw these books at a teaching store on Bell Road. I thought they were cool because the same material was presented in three different reading levels! They might be what you are looking for. :)

Leah,

Hey thanks. THey are exactly what I am looking for. I posted this on t.net and someone else alerted me and I was thrilled to see a link. I knew I could order off the Internet but thanks for the heads up on seeing before purchasing. I’m on the Mesa/Gilbert border and will look at the teachers store here first. If I am in the Bell area, I will stop by. Do you have the name of the store?

Good to see a fellow Arizonoan on the board. You by chance don’t use Phono-graphix, do you? I feel alone in this state in regards to my curriculum.

Hi Michelle,

Well I’m in NM. I feel that I am in the hinterlands, so to speak. I don’t know what they use in the public schools. I am not using PG right at the moment. I am using OG and LMB. I’m sure I am in the minority.

MichelleAZ,
The name of the store is Teaching Stuff on 51st Ave and Bell. There is also one closer to you, I believe. I am on the opposite side of the valley in Peoria. I am experimenting with Reading Reflex with some of my kids. If it is successful, I will think about getting the training. I have so many questions about it and saw your helpful information on several posts.

Thanks for the tip on the store.

Leah,

If you are ever in the east valley let me know. I am using MathUsee. I am on a MathUsee listserve and almost never post. I posted one time and met a homeschooling mom after she saw my post. She came to my class this past week. She actually used to attend the school where I teach.lol. We had so much fun chatting. We have a lot in common. She uses Math U See, Phono-graphix, Power SPelling, AVKO Spelling, and some of the same software I use. I didn’t even know anyone around here had even heard of Phono-graphix. It was so great being in the same room with a like minded person. Our curriculums were almost identicle. We just kept laughing the more we talked. She has some special needs kids and did not read about any of these programs on ldonline.org. She got her information off a homeschooling board and other boards.

Anyway, if you want to try PG and want to get together, let me know. You should join ReadNOW yahoo group for tips on Pg. I check there usually daily but not here.

MichelleAZ,
Thanks for the tip on the yahoo group and especially for the invite to get together. I would love it!! You sound like my kind of person too. I am so excited because today after all this intense work with a 1st grader using PG, he finally got it and has discovered he can blend sounds to get words! It was like Hallelujah!! He was so excited! And to think just a very short time ago he couldn’t even get through the word building. He wasn’t even able to tell me the first sound he heard.

You will see many AHAs with PG. I have never seen so many lighbulbs so quickly. Email me offline if you want to get together over break or somthing. If you have children maybe we could meet between at the Phoenix zoo. Well, it might be closer to me.
