I want to let everybody know that your help and input has been a great help to me. In the past two months I have greatly researched and educated myself in LD beyond what I knew as a teacher. However, I have so much to learn and go through yet. Everybody sharing ideas and experiences is an incredibly valuable resource.
My questions are: Does anybody belong to a local parent support group in their area or district? If you do, do you find it helpful? Also, has anybody had any experience with starting that type of thing? Any ideas?
With all that we have been going through it is so easy to get lost in all of this. I can’t help but think about families out there who are going through this also. Maybe there’s a way to help and support eachother right in our communities. As far as I know there is nothing in my area at the present time.

Thank you again, Janis. I haven’t been successful finding anything near me. I do believe my daughter is dyslexic but haven’t had a professional tell me yet. The nearest branch from the link below is a good 2 and a half hours from me. The other one doesn’t even list NJ! There really doesn’t seem to be a whole lot here in southern NJ. In the meantime, I’ll keep looking!

How close are you to Delaware?
There’s an active group in Delaware called, I think, ASSIST that gets structured systematic reading out to people and schools. Try http://www.readingassist.org/

JenM, This is my support group. That and a loose group of mothers of “different” children I have met in the hours I have spent waiting for my son at the speech therapist, vision therapist etc. Now he is enrolled in a special school for dyslexic children, so needless to say I have met many wonderful mom’s there too. But push comes to shove , if I have a question or concern I come to this board.

I will say. like Karen, this is my primary support group. There are no organizations here eiither.
I did contact the LDA in a city an hour away and they said they’d be glad to come here to do presentations if we had an interested group, sort of like branch chapter, I guess. I haven’t done it because I have too much else on my plate, but starting a new chapter is possible if you can find some other people.

I personally feel that it is best to connect with a well respected organization to be sure you are getting good information. The two that come to mind are the International Dyslexia Association and the Learning Disabilities Asso. of America:
