holidays

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Christmas time is here and everybody is looking forward to the break from school. Teachers and students as well. With ld students, there is a small problem, in that short time, they sometimes forget what they have been previously taught. I often end up reviewing everything again, before going on. What I’d like to know what can I do to keep them from forgeting too much. To give them homework to do over the holidays would be useless, they wouldn’t do it anyways. Any suggestions? I have some trouble understanding your post. How long have your students been with you? Are you saying they forget everything they’ve been taught over the winter break?

That would be remarkable. What I think you’re seeing is that over the break, they primarily speak their native languages with their families. You’re the ESL teacher, right? So when they come back, their English is rusty. It’s not that they’ve forgotten everything - it’s just that it takes a while to get back on track.

If you want to have them keep up with English, tell them to watch English language cartoons over the break. It’s one kind of homework they might do and more and more research is showing that cartoons with their visuals reinforcing the language being spoken is an excellent way to learn a language from the ground up.
