Ok, I think I am starting to lose it. Therapy didn’t start right away at school because speech therapist at school was having health problems. After a couple days of looking over my child’s report card I noticed there was no IEP progress report on the speech. Therapist E-mailed me back at my request of what happened and let me know that health problems were delaying progress report and will come out this Friday. I asked my child if she had gone to speech therapy and her reply was no one told her to go, so I am wondering how much she has missed. I had already talked to the speech therapist earlier this year about her missing therapy. I E-mailed her asking therapist to include how much therapy time was spent with my child so far this year. I am going to go nuts, this year has been so hard to deal with- Is there anything else I should do?
Re: trying to get speech therapy at school
Thanks for your reply. Yes, I had figured out the Monday and Friday scenerio a couple years ago and have asked for other days. This year I finally got Wednesdays and Thursdays. The other thing I had been told a couple years ago is that the speech therapist could instruct a teacher to do an activity and that would be considered speech therapy time. When I get back the therapist reply, I’ll talk to the principle about future covering of her speech time. Thanks again for your reply-
that is called collaboration
and that does count for the part of the IEP that states “collaboration” or consul with the teacher…but if she hs written in her IEP that she gets “speech therapy in a small group of 5 or less or she gets one on one 2 times a week and it isn’t happening and they are in arrears you have something to hang them on
Re: trying to get speech therapy at school
My IEP states services in the area of articulation and expressive language with a speech pathologist responsible in the location of Speech/Language room 50 min/wk 2 times/wk. It doesn’t mention group size but the particular room is small. My outside speech pathologist suggested I have the school speech pathologist do the Language Processing Test by Gail Richards because they had alot of goals and no logical order and thought this test would help. The school pathologist did do the test but did not know how to interpret it,so she was having my outside speech pathologist do that. I have been waiting for the results because the school pathologist has been having health problems and they had been playing phone tag. This is my child’s 3 year evaluation time which they want to do toward the end of the year. She has only 1 more year at this school as in 5th now. I wanted to get her started off in the right direction ,but between the speech and reading trying to get the appropriate remediation I am having a heck of a time. Thanks for all you input-
you mean to tell me that..
The school SLP didn’t know how to interpret a test she gave? Boy that is SAD…especially if the test would help determine a logical sequence for remediation…Sounds like this SLP is in over her head…You know…I ended up doing my daughter’s remediation outside of the district SLP’s. We went private, I did some of it and hired other people to do the rest when I couldn’t work with my daughter when puberty hit.
Re: trying to get speech therapy at school
I would have to agree with Patti that I think that is very strange. That test has subtests in the areas of labeling, stating functions, associations, categorization, similarities, differences, multiple meanings, and attributes. So you score the test, see which areas are low, and work on them. This test also has a companion kit for remediation. How much easier could it get?

If your child is sick and they are absent on their “Scheduled” therapy day the SLP doesn’t have to make it up. If there is a school holiday or if there is a class activity during the scheduled therapy time…the SLP doesn’t have to do a make-up. If your child is late to school and is not present when the SLP is there for therapy the SLP doesn’t have to make that up either.
The case carrier for your child is responsible to make sure that your child receives all the services that are coming to her. If there are make up sessions to be done by the SLP this has to be done, it is the law. I have been filling in for an SLP on maternity leave and I have to report to the principal every week how many sessions I made up that were due from when they had no SLP and how many make-ups are left to do.
I would ask for an accounting of when your child’s speech therapy day and times are. I will tell you that those who are scheduled on monday or Friday don’t get seen as frequently as those seen on Tuesday/Thursday because of school holidays.
