i need information for a english project

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am doing a 9th grade English project. The project is issues that effect teens. I am in a group that choose to do learning disabilities. And i have the hardest part of the project. I had to talk about the medication of ADHD, auditory and processing disability, dyslexia, and dyscalculia. I have to talk about IDEA and IEP and how they relate with those disabilities. I have to talk about school technics and accomodations in school, and i was wondering if anyone can give me some information on that because i am having the hardest time finding information.

It does sound like you have the hard work! This site has a ton on info on the subjects you have listed. Have you started reading articles?

Can you narrow down your questions? I could right a book on any one of your topics and I’m just an adult with LD and the parent of a preteen with LD!

Good luck,
Barb

It might help you to organize the information you already have.

The issue that affects teens that you are studying is learning disabilities.

How does it affect them? That should be your first question.

The quick answer to it would be - learning disabilities can cause teens to be unsucessful in school and to have lowered self-esteen. Learning disabilities can even lead to depression in teens and sometimes contribute to a teen’s decision to try drugs or engage in high risk behaviors.

What are common learning disabilites among teens?

There are many different kinds of learning disabilities but commonly recongized ones are ADD and ADHD, processing issues, dyslexia and dyscalculia.

How are teens with learning disabilties helped?

While there are some remediations that can be offered to those with learning differences, our government passed legislation in the form of IDEA that mandated that students with identified learning disabilities be given IEPs which provide accmodations and/or modfications to ‘level the playing field’ a bit or otherwise said, to enable them to better achieve success in school.

The above could be your rough draft of your presentation based on what you said in your post. Those are all the concepts you touched on put into a sensible structure. You can continue to fill in the details.

Good luck.

Go to the page on this site called LD In Depth. You can’t read all the articles (none of us can read everything!) but choose a couple on each of your topics and read the introductiory paragraphs. This will give you an overview for a start.

Do please do this for yourself; learning to research is an important skill.
