Hello,I was wondering if anyone on the board knows anything about the Action Reading program? They have a home version called Fast Track or maybe the newer version is called FUNdamentals(not sure). If there is anyone that has used it with LD kids or if there are any teachers here that have used the program could you post the kind of results you’ve had?The developer of the program(Jeanie Eller) supposedly(sp)?taught a group of illliterate adults to read in two weeks time for the Oprah show. Thanks
Re: Action Reading?
Um…. sounds great for the Oprah show… but I’d want to know what the individual LD students’ needs were — this program could address it for some of them. Also, adults *are* very different than children in what works for teaching them. (For starters, even good readers tend to have what would be considered *lousy* phonemic awareness!)
Action Reading
Yes, I’ve taught First Grade for about 20 years. I have attended action Reading workshops and know several teachers who think it is wonderful for all types of students
Re: Action Reading?
Could you provide some details why?
Sorry, I have learned — the hard way — that the mroe times teh reply is “oh, it’s just good, it’s good for everybody, oh, it’s just excellent” the less likely it is to be, honestly, good for everybody — we’re so excited about our successes that we don’t look at the kiddos in the back row who are smiling and coasting along (and we sure don’t look at the statistics three ;years down the road… )
Well I’d need to see the data. However the causes of adult illiteracy are so varied that it is possible I guess. There are folks that were not really even in school. Others who may have had emotional problems, 40 to 1 classroom ratios (teacher to student). You can teach the code for reading in a minimal length of time.
