Update on starting Adderall this week....

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

For those who were interested in how my inattentive type dd did on adderall this week. Her teacher did notice a difference in her schoolwork, but most importantly, dd noticed a difference herself. She said she was able to finish her work on time and that she didn’t have times when she forgot what she was suppose to be doing. She is having some rebound side effects and we may switch her to concerta to see if that helps with the rebound. Thanks to everyone who posted to me on my first post earlier this week. I’ll be sure to update everyone if and when we see progress with her reading.

Glad to hear that you have found some success. My daughter had terrible rebound from Adderall. She is now on Concerta and doesn’t experience it at all (she had it too with Ritalin SR and reg. Ritalin, just not as bad). I wish you continued success!

Is your daughter taking regular adderall or adderall XR? Sometimes the extended release formulations help with rebound, as does adding a very small additional dose of regular (not extended release) medication at the time you see the rebound. Of course, you’ll want to check with your doctor about what is best for your child. How a child responds to a particular stimulant is very individualized. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries of different medications and careful adjustments of dosages to get it right.

Jenm-

She gets agitated easily, yells at me and her little sister, emotional. She’s never been hyper, but when she is coming off of it, she bounces around and is hyper.

I did try something this afternoon with her that her teacher recommended. She said that for some kids, drinking a sugary, caffeinated drink may help with rebound. She drank a dr. pepper and ate some candy. We’ve had minimal meltdown. I think I’ll give her a break this weekend and try it again on Monday just to see what happens.

Guest…

She is on Adderall XR. I did talk with her dr today and she was hesitant about adding a dose in the afternoon because she is already having trouble going to sleep. We’ve had a nice afternoon today, so I may just go ahead and give her the adderall on Monday and see what happens.

Just my moms opinion here

I would recommend letting her adjust for a few weeks before giving her weekend vacations from the medicine. When you start back on Mondays you will not know what is a possible long term concern and what is a reaction after being off for two days

She may experience a headache when she is on Adderall, if she is off it for awhile and then goes back on…My son took a 3 week break off meds when he was on vacation…When he strarted up again he had some headaches until he got acclimated to Adderall again.

The rebounds will ease up as her body gets used to being on it. Also be careful with sugar and caffiene between 6:00 and 8:00pm as when my daughter eats late and if she has something with sugar in it or something like a Dr. Pepper she cant’ get to sleep at her usual time, she gets wired from the sugar and caffiene. She is on concerta…

Suzi C: Just wanted to say ‘keep it up’, Lord of the Rings is in HER future too! (my son is reading this FOR FUN this week, and from the commentary, quite effectively…BIG GRIN!) I’ll look forward to updates — good luck getting the meds figured out!

Why are there side-effects. What causes them? Are there any long term side-effects, not yet apparent, that we should be worried about? And why would you consider another unproven drug right after the first drug was such a complete failure? Isn’t “switching to Concerta”, a little like using your child as a Guinea Pig?

What explanation did your doctor give for having prescribed such a bad course of treatment? Was he guessing? Is he still?
