Dore Centers

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Has anyone out there had any experience with the Dore Center program? I’m looking into it for my son who has been diagnosed with Dyslexia and ADHD.

My only experience with the Dore Center is from watching their videos. There are a number of practitioners who are coming from the same body of research as they are. Others you may want to check out (to compare and contrast) is Neuronet therapy, the Handle Institute, Balametrics, and some developmental optometrists who “prescribe” sensory motor/visual exercise programs.

I have just finished reading a book by Sam Berne called Without Ritalin.

I’m pretty convinced that all of these people are on to something but I don’t know if one is better than the other or better than others for a particular child.[/i]

I know how tempting it is to want to try “something” that sounds new and exciting. I’m no expert on ADHD, but if your child has been diagnosed with dyslexia, there are programs out there that are time tested and tested with scientific validity and that will work. Please don’t be taken in by the next great thing that is untested. It’s not so much about wasting your money, but rather wasting time that could be much better used to attack your child’s dyslexia. I speak from experience as the mom of a now 12 year old dyslexic boy. I wasted one complete summer on something that “sounded” like it ought to help his reading fluency. The program was called PACE and it was a total waste of time. Since then, he’s been in Lindamood Bell reading tutoring, and is making prograss. Best of luck!

One way to gauge whether a particular approach is worth it is to look at whether there is solid research showing measurable improvement in the conditions for which the treatment is advertised. If you want to know if a program is well-researched, do a search on medline. You have to register but it is free. You can find thousands of abstracts of medical research there. If you don’t see anything reported in medline, be wary. The treatment likely has not been subjected to rigourous scrutiny.
