Our school is considering buying Earobics software for use in kindergarten and possibly for LD and English language learners. Anyone using this is a school setting have comments, suggestions?
Re: Earobics feedback?
No, Earobics is NOT systematic phonics instruction. It is a very useful program to help build phonemic awareness and related auditory skills. It would be a nice supplement to a systematic phonics instruction program. But there would be no reason for there to be transfer from doing Earobics to reading unknown words in text! The classroom teacher responsible for teaching reading needs to be teaching the systematic phonics.
Anyway, to answer the original question, yes, I use Earobics and feel it is valuable as a supplement for almost any child learning to read.

Re: Earobics feedback?
I agree that Earobics is a valuable supplement. I use it to build up phonemic awareness in my LD students that really seem to be lacking in that basic area. I have also spoken with teachers in my district who use it with their entire K & 1 classes and have found it very beneficial.

Another option is the Sound Reading CD from http://www.soundreading.com . This CD is more fun for students than Earobics and works on more than phonemic awareness. Call the developers for more information about its appropriateness for your particular student population.

Our speech therapist uses it and he highly recommends it. I teach an SDC class of 2nd and 3rd graders. One student who just completed the program was very good at spitting back sounds of letters. However, there was no automatic transfer when he came to an unknown word in a reading passage. When I asked him to sound out the work he could do it but he would not always be able to read the word. I think this is more due to his disability than the earobics program. I think it could help quite a few students…..it seems to be systematic phonics instruction and the research says this is very good for students…..most students anyway.
