Help!!

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello,
I am new to this forum and would like to introduce myself as well as hopefuly recieve some advice on a situation.

I am a 24 year old female suffering from ADHD. I was diagnosed at 15 yrs old and still suffer from this disorder. I am currently on Ritalin and recieving counseling for copeing skills etc (my meds help alot but it is still a daily struggle.

Here is where I need help and just seem to keep running into a brick wall. When I filled my perscription for the first time w/o health insurance it cost me $116.00 for a one month supply! And that is the generic medication! I started looking for any kind of financial help for my scripts and medical bills but have been told I dont qualify for any help. I cannot afford my meds , counseling but I cannot afford to go with out it. I am a full time college student and am not working. I tried to attend school in the past but could not make the grades while working. I tried everything from working only two days a week to cutting down my class schedule to two classes. None of this worked. Does anyone know of anyway I can recieve some help with this? I have even called the drug manufactuers but they really dont care. This situation has been so frustrating and painfull for me that I am about to give up. I was told everything from “have you considered getting pregnant? Then I could help you with healthcare” to “ADHD being a disability is a matter of opinion”javascript:emoticon(‘’)
Anyway if anyone knows of any programs that could help me I would be very grateful if you could point me in their direction.
Jennifer

hi,

have you checked with your college to see if you could get free counseling there? i got it free when i was in college.

i can’t afford ritalin w/out insurance either, so i just don’t take it! have you tried working with an ADD coach? also you might look into student loans or governmental prescription assistance.

good luck!

Yea my school had some free counseling to students as well…. What is going on with insurance, you don’t have any? Can you get financial aid that can help maybe? Maybe you need to talk to a counselor at school and see what they say …

If you are 24 and a full time student, your parents should still be able to claim you as a dependent and you could receive health insurance through them. Otherwise, doesn’t your school offer health insurance to full time students of some kind? Check with your college’s student health service.

You can purchase health insurance with a prescription plan on your own but it will be fairly expensive. Prescription plan or no, it’s taking a risk to live without health insurance. some companies even offer health insurance to part time workers. take two classes at a time and work two days a week. If you can pass four classes without working, you should be able to pass two classes while working part-time. and how long ago did you quit work? COBRA should allow you to buy health insurance for a year after you quit I think.

Good luck.
