S.P.I.R.E. reading program???

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have been told that “S.P.I.R.E.” is a comprehensive reading program. Also that it can be used effectively to teach and remediate reading for LD, CI and slow learning students at the same time, AND in groups of 10-12.

Does anyone have any experience with this program? Used in the way I describe?

What length of time is needed (daily)?

Thank you very much.

I’m a mom who used SPIRE both as an after-school supplement and as a home school reading program. My son (now 11) has moderate to severe dylexia. I researched a variety of programs before I chose SPIRE, and read quite a bit of the academic research (I’m a university professor, but my discipline is definitely not reading!) I had an independent reading teacher test my son at the beginning and end of the year (june 02-May 03). She reported accuracy gains of almost 2 grade levels and speed/fluency gains of about 1 grade level. I was, and remain, very very pleased with the program. We still use it as an after school supplement.

It is a good, comprehensive reading program in the OG tradition (and quite possibly a full-fledged official OG program) that just took a while to get published and marketed. Susan Long has used it often and well (and back in oh, ‘99 posted often and well about it here).

Hi!
Where on the web can I find out about SPIRE? I have not heard of this and would like to look into it.
Thanks,
Debbie

SPIRE was recently picked up by EPS. If go you to their website (EPS.com I think, but just type EPS in Google and you’ll find it) you can read about the program. I’m not sure if you can order on-line yet or not. Some time ago Susan Long posted a comparison of SPIRE and Wilson; I believe that it was on this board, but maybe a few years back. Her comparison was very helpful to me in choosing.

I just pulled out all of the literature I have on S.P.I.R.E. and found the web address on an order form. Thank you all for your input. I am going to begin the program with my 1st graders. (www.spire.org)
