My third grader

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

This has not been a good year for my third grader. Nor was the second grade year. She is falling further behind. She can barely multiply, add, subtract, writing is a nightmare for her. While she has the sounds she can’t really put it all together to make a word.

She has teacher that is very cold and tells me nothing. No matter how much I commuincate. The resource person is nice but she goes behind my back and makes inflates my concerns, to the point that the teacher gets upset and that is very obvious. My child comes homes with numerous papers that are not completed. With a note for me to assist her at home.Which we already do more than they will ever acknowledge

Even though the school supposedly has a policy that says that teacers and parents are to communicate. We are out of our school district what do I do, file for mediation then will really send them in a tail spin and cause more grief.

What can I do here at home, I have alot on my plate.

Polly,

It sounds like a good private evaluation would be a good start. Then if you post the results here, you can get some great advice as to what therapies and programs might help. Most of us here have seen that schools rarely remediate and kids do tend to fall further behind. It sounds like your child could use a full evaluation including educational achievement tests, a psychological (WISC for IQ), and possibly OT and developmental vision because of the writing issues, as well as a language eval.

A child should not be expected to complete assignments above her level when she is not receiving remediation which would help her be able to do them. You can either homeschool, hire a qualified private tutor, or tutor yourself while keeping her in the current school. But if she has an IEP, you need to get some accommodations to reduce the homework so she can have time for the tutoring.

A tip for future years is to keep your ear to the ground as to which teacher is the next grade would be the better teacher for your child and request that teacher. For this year, it’s clear that communication is NOT what this district wants no matter what they say and it’s also clear that your child’s teacher gets defensive. I’d be careful as to what you share with the resource teacher knowing that she shares too much with your child’s teacher.

If testing hasn’t been done, it should be. If it has been done, you might want to have shortened assignments put into your daughter’s IEP. Why is so much work coming home?

This is a difficult situation. Good luck with it.
