Hi….
I’m the mom of a 13-year-old, seventh grader who has a severe nonverbal learning disorder. Her neuropsychiatrist has recommended that I begin looking for a high school that specializes in educating children with learning disabilities. Although I live in an area that has a good high school district, it does not have the resources I feel are necessary to educate my daughter sufficiently. I have “googled” until I’m blue in the face. Does anyone have a source for these schools?
I live in the Chicago area (northwest suburb) and hope to stay in this area.
Thank you so much for your help.
Re: High Schools - LD Students
Since NLD is fairly new on the labeling field, don’t just search for that. The good schools for students with LDs are often good for NLDs, too (I know the one where I taught was — we didn’t call them NLDs, but they were certainly LDs).
Does the neuropsychiatrist have any suggestions for you? If he/she practices in your area, likely he knows the names of schools in the area that direct themselves to kids with learning differences.
there’s also Peterson’s Guide to the Independent Schools which has a section devoted to special needs schools. You should be able to get a copy of Peterson’s at any good library or book store or through amazon.com
Good luck.
