Games for OG programs??

Hmmm…. what levels?
(though, I know they exist — if I haven’t answered in a week, ask again, it’s BUSY ‘round here :-))

Hmm , any all. I have two students currently in OG programs. One at the CCVCC type words and another doing multisyllables, schwas that sort of thing.

If you follow the link, it will lead you to some free printable materials. You might want to look at the Contraction Strips and Concentration Word Games that I posted back in March and April, 2003. The word games include words beginning with wh, th, and wa in addition to lots of prepositions. These include many high frequency words that students need to learn that don’t fit the regular spelling patterns that many of us who use OG methods rely on so heavily.

Sight words are perhaps the easiest thing to spice up and lots of stuff is out there. Easy to do lotto, concentration, bingo, etc etc. (My current population, such as it is, doesn’t have any trouble with them.)

I am looking more for specifically OG type activities. I’m finding they don’t lend so well to the usual types of games, etc.

Also looking for free stuff esp.

You might want to investigate LexiaSoftware. It’s a pretty high quality supplement to good instruction. It has a program for each age group. I know that the YWCA uses it for reading instruction in my city. They’ll send you a 30-day demo. I was impressed with it, but didn’t have the money to spring for the whole program.

I’m using the Barton system so I am NOT looking for a reading program.

I was looking for some games. I did, however, find a great source of creative material. There is a discussion group on yahoo for parents using multisensory methods (MSSL at home). There are very creative people on this board (and I saw an old post or two from Sue). I also found a book of creative ideas in the EPS catalog under Slingerland. I have not seen this yet— but ordered it. Someone read me some of the contents so it seems applicable. Language! also has a game packet. However this was $119 or so. I think I have more time than money but this would be good if you don’t. Barton does have games in her books but as the books get higher in no. there are fewer of them and in 4 there aren’t any. She has a website with games but I didnt’ like it much.

I have also had some success making up some. The best ones are Bingo and tic tac toe (actually got that idea from someone). I found some game pieces, spinners, dice (oh gee they were word family dice but they have stickers you don’t need to use), a timer, etc. The Franklin Speller that comes with book 4 has a few neat games that one of my students is crazy about. I also got a magnetic board/white board that I put on the wall. The kids are wild over this as well.

The Franklin Speller is better for more advanced readers, and everyone loves the white board.

Oh sorry, I think you meant as a supplement. I think I was looking for something cheaper. :-) (Also think it is only PC, and I have a Mac).

SImon Sounds it Out and Simon Spells are good, too, when you get that bonus (and they’re Mac…were Mac ONly for a while.)
