Recommended software programs?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Does anyone recommend specific software programs that can address beginning math skills? The children (around age 6) in need of such programs have high functioning PDD. They love the computer but often get sidetracked on many commercial academic type programs- by the music and non-goal oriented components they tend to include. Any suggestions? We are talking pretty basic here and at the level of recognizing numbers, counting, and beginning addition/subtraction with manipulatives. Software would be primarily for home use.

The first place I go when looking for educational stuff for special needs is Don Johnston (http://www.donjohnston.com) — but I don’t know if they have anything in the math department or not.

Don Johnson doesnt’ have too much math stuff. The only thing I remember is a program that gives out basic math problems (not sure how high it goes) in a nice clean format. I think it is mainly for physically handicapped as it works with different switches, etc. (Access to Math I think). It might be ok for PDD kids, depending on the kids of course.
It doesn’t really teach anything, and the practice is random, not what I would consider a more instructive way of presenting problems (teaching different problems in a logical order).

There is also a cute little calculator program (Big Calc). It talks and is more kid friendly than the usual computer program.
