Help with activities for student with cerebral palsy

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello

I am a teachers aid for a student with cerebral palsy. She is 11yrs old, she is in a wheelchair. She has excellent speech and comprehension of what is said. She has very limited hand and arm movement which means she is unable to independantly paint etc. She is unable to recognise words or alphabet. She can count to 5. She is very bored in the classroom at the moment. Her teacher is still persisting with reading, counting, and having me fill in worksheets for her. She only wants to do things herself and is sick of me reading to her. If anybody has any ideas that can help to make her learning more fun and relevant please reply.

Thanking you in advance

:)

Linda,
Has an assistive technology assessment been completed on this student? There are a variety of excellent tools available that may benefit her. At this point, she sounds dependent upon others for both input and output. This is not in keeping with the principle of FAPE - free, APPROPRIATE education. It would not be appropriate for her peers to be totally dependent upon others for both input and output. Why has the team allowed that for this student?
The team must explore alternative ways for this student to independently demonstrate what she knows and what she has learned. It’s time for her IEP team to consider the use of assistive technology to meet her IEP goals.

Just a thought, but maybe if you try an assistive tech. program like Kurzweil 3000

http://www.kurzweiledu.com/

This will not only read to her, but she can see it as it reads to her.

Yes your A.T. person should ready have a hundred ideas! Specialized keyboard…..
