stress relieving activities

What do you do to relieve stress?

When it’s warm and it’s been a rough spell one of my favorite things to do is take the kids to the beach for the day. It doesn’t matter what season. It’s supposed to be warmer this weekend so I think we’re heading down to my aunt’s beach house. Nobody will be around and sometimes this time of year there are really nice shells. I love to put down a blanket on the beach and just listen to the waves, my kids playing (hopefully not fighting), and feel the sunshine! I always come home feeling so refreshed!

In the summer I love camping. We go camping a lot and when we’re not I’m usually planning the next trip out! Sometimes we take the popup trailer. Sometimes we use our tents. Sometimes we even pack all the tents in a boat and go out to a remote wilderness site for awhile! It is so relaxing to just get away like that!

For day to day stress when you can’t get away is when it gets tough! What I try to do is get to the Y to work out! I was real bad about it for about six months. I just got back into a routine in the beginning of January! I don’t ever seem to lose weight but I know when I work out my resting pulse rate stays down as does my blood pressure. Really that is probably more important anyway!

My biggest stress reliever is artwork. I don’t get to do too much these days but when I do it’s a whole other zone.

So, what about everybody else? We all have stress in our lives and we who are here know that sometimes life is even more stressful when adhd is a part of it!

What a great idea for a thread, JenM!

Let’s see… this weekend, I think I’m taking the girls on a daytrip to Pittsburgh for some shopping and people-watching. That’s the closest real “city” to where we are. May sound like an odd way to relieve stress, but let’s face it, the 3 of us are city girls! It ain’t Manhattan, but we’ll have a good time. The weather should cooperate, it’s supposed to be 50 degrees on Saturday. :D

I really can’t afford the shopping part, but we’ve had a really bad week here, and didn’t you suggest that we get away? I think it’s a great idea.

If we were closer to a beach, we might do the beach thing as well. We were on Long Island over Christmas break, and we went to the beach when it was 10 degrees! Remember how awfully cold it was then? I was freezing from the wind off the ocean, but my girls didn’t care. They loved it.

As for me, for relaxation, I write poetry. Really bad poetry, I am sure, but hey, whatever helps ease the stress, right?

I like long walks, unfortunately it’s been too cold in the Chicago area for long walks, although it is warming up this weekend!

Cathryn, enjoy your day this weekend. I know you really need it. Now you know where my advice is coming from! Sometimes it helps just to clear your mind for a day. Then I find the answers come to me a little clearer.

By the way, my husband is originally from Long Island. We had a long distance relationship where we were driving back and forth from here and there. Both of us still have some family on the island.

JenM,

My daughters’ aunt has a really great house in Baldwin, Long Island, where we spent Christmas Eve. The beach we went to over Christmas was Robert Moses Beach on Fire Island. I love that beach. And Watch Hill too, because it’s off the beaten path.

I have made a slight change of plans for this weekend, and my daughter actually smiled at me last night, and said “thank you, Mama”. We are leaving right after school today, staying overnight in our favorite hotel in Pittsburgh, and staying until late Saturday. And you’re right, we really need it.

My cousin lives in Sayville (???) and has a house on Fire Island. I’ve never been there but hear it’s very nice! My husband and his grandparents used to live in Babylon. He still has a couple of aunts up there around there.

Have a great weekend! Relax as much as you can! A smile is a good sign.

Yes, JenM, after the week we had, that smile was worth a million dollars!

I think it may be Sayetteville, LI? I could be wrong, though. And I love Fire Island, it is awesome!

I plan to pretend that we have no problems this weekend, and I hope my daughter can do that too. We just came from her therapy session, but I have no time right now, got to run! I should be online Saturday night sometime.
