My dau is having her 3 yr eval before entering high next year and I was just informed that the district isn’t doing the psych eval because she has been evaled some many times before…Should I let this slide or should I insist on the portion being done too??? :?: I would appreciate any feedback- [email protected]

It is somewhat dangerous to redo an IQ test at that age because sometimes the IQ has fallen and will then eliminate the discrepancy and the child may no longer qualify for special ed. So no, I would not redo the WISC. I would want the achievement tests done, though. You can do the IQ privately if you want one for some reason.

I have already requested the psych to be redone for 2 reasons…1.the school psych that was to do it filled out the form and listed my dau as a male (figured it would be a good idea for him to at least meet her!) and 2. I have been told that IQ scores don’t improve-I find that hard to believe. Her classification is visually impaired so the IQ score is basically meaningless to any change in service. But I will consider what you have said-I just sent the email today so I know that I can still change my mind-Thanks!

Oh, you did not say VI in your original post, so I assumed it was LD. So that is right, the IQ test won’t matter. And you are also right, IQ can fall and it can increase.

THey no longer *have* to do the re-eval, but unless you think you’ve got enough information, I’d ask for it anyway unless you’re really concerned that they woulnd’t find her eligible (if an IQ decreases and somebody suggests ineligibility based on it, I’d make noises like that IQ drop might just be evidence that the program has not been appropriate and perhaps private placemetn should be considered… but it shouldn’t be a problem.)

Yes it’s me Royce…I have already requested the psych eval to be done over because 1. it will not affect her placement-she is classified VI 2. the psych who filled out the form for the transition team listed my dau as a male so for his stupidity alone he should spend time with her and 3. I was told that your IQ doesn’t change and I find that hard to believe!
Also she was tested with the woodcock-johnson this year and the kaufman 3 years ago so I have no way to figure out if she has made progress or not SO I have also requested she be tested with the kaufman. Apples to Apples! If you have any other ideas please let me know asap because the meeting is scheduled March 16th.
I am going to schedule a meeting with the woman who heads up the district high school programs to discuss the lack of guidance for my dau in dealing with her first IEP. I sat on the transition committee and heard lots of noise about all the things they should do only to find none are being done! (You would think in my very small district and my rather prominent role on many SPED committees-they won’t screw with my kid-SILLY ME!) Also I have been given 1 observation sheet from the school counselor (he spent an entire 1/2 hour in her classroom), 3 teacher eval sheets, 1 school nurse eval for medical history & health, 1 assistive tech eval with the same suggections from every other year and the woodcock johnson with only the group SS - no subtests scores and the ??? psych report to go into the meeting with to plan out her high school experience. I was also told that the middle school principal (not the high school one), the middle school sped teacher, the assistive tech person, a high school sped teacher (who works with primarily the cluster population) and her case manager would be attending-I quickly email back and told the case manager that HER high school counselor and the woman who heads up the district high school sped needed to be there! Haven’t heard back on that!
Two more things that I have found out since being on so many district sped committees-1. there are only 5 children in the district that are classified VI with a budget of $90,000-my dau receives NOTHING from that department yet her classification enables the district to collect dollars in her name. We have been spending her college funds at Sylvan to help fill in the gaps from prior years-something smells fishy here!
The second thing is the school she will be going to (at her request-her sister went there-open enrollment here) has no CWC classrooms which is what she has been in all middle school. I really don’t have a problem with that in fact I think will be beneficial to her but if I have problems getting her services and the district makes noises about making her move-I just have to remind them of the fact that they approved the enrollment choice was because the other school’s sped classes are overcrowded!

Royce…sorry to hear that things are not so good with your daughter. Hope it get’s better. Teenage years can be tough, and as things become more complex with more things demanded of her and on top of her vision issues you may find that she will still continue to have problems with organization of her homework, assignments, papers, and projects, when they are due, it will take a lot of effort on the part of her IEP team and the family to keep her afloat with 6 different teachers and 6 different classes.

I have just received the same information regarding my son. There is a new psychologist at the school and they called to tell me that they wanted to meet with me for his IEP to determine his needs for next year. He also indicated that it was time for his re-evaluation but they are going to decide during the meeting as to if he needs the re-evaluation.
I am curious, what grade is your daughter in? I know what they are attempting to do with my child and that is removing him from his resource classes in an effort to give him a special education diploma instead of helping him earn a regular diploma.

There are other assessements that can be done instead of the WISC…they have to do some kind of evaluation to show present level of performance. Perhaps the DTLA-4 would be good Detroit Test of Learning Aptitude. The Illinois Test of Linguistic Abilties-3 is another one that SLPS’s use to see where kids are in spoken and written expression.
