special needs and multicultural issues

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello everyone!
I am a graduate student at California State University, Fullerton. I am earning my teaching credentials and will be done in May. I was hoping for some help on one of my last assignments. I am looking for any information on issues related to working with students with special needs and integrating multicultural issues into teaching and learning. For example, last semester I student taught in a fourth grade classroom. One student was classified as GATE but diagnosed with ADHD. This child is hispanic and his parents do not speak any English. I had trouble as a teacher reaching this child. He was very heavily medicated due to his ADHD but I knew he was very intelligent. I did not get much support from his parents since they did not speak English. Is there anyone who has had a similar experience, or could share a similar issue??
Thank you for your time,
Michelle

Hi Michelle,

I just graduated from CSUF last year as an SLP. Have you checked out the Multicultural Clinic that the Communications department has run by Dr. Wyatt? They would have lot of information and maybe you can talk with some of the Speech students that are participating in this clinic. I have loaned out some of my multicultural books. Check out an author by the last name of Battle and you will find information that you seek to help with this project.
