Tired ofmaking sure child actually goes to pull-out session

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

After fighting about my child getting her speech sessions, I am finding out she is missing her writing sessions also. She says she forgets . They put notes on her desk for a reminder. I have requested that they put it into the IEP that they call her for her sessions. They don’t want to put into the IEP but will call her to her sessions. I know the principal would say she needs to remember on her own which is what he told me a while ago.We are having intake meeting soon and I think I will request a memory test. I don’t know what the problem is, about putting into the IEP, that the instructor will call the child to the session, but if it happens again I will be forcing this issue. Sorry, but I just had to rant.

What looks like a memory issue could be ADD too.. I am an SLP I have a kid with special needs. For my kids…I go in to the kids classrooms to remind them about sessions, I leave post it notes, on their desks, I call on the phone, I also chase them down at lunch. It is hard work to keep on top of kids who forget about sessions and technically if the child doesn’t show up or the teacher has another activity scheduled we don’t have to make up the sessions.

Sorry but there are two sides to this and I have been on both sides…

Well, Im in a feisty mood this morning and this is a pet peeve of mine!!!

If they wont take the responsibility to remind her, it falls to you. You could get one of those pay as you go cell phones for her and call her each day(be sure that ringer is good and loud) You could call the main office and remind them to remind her

I mean, they’re children, and legally they are agreeing to provide X services. I dont know if anyone has ever taken this to due process, but I have to think it would fall on the school to handle this one(IF its in the IEP which I would insist upon that it be put there and insist IN WRITING)

I wouldnt blink if a teacher occasionally forgot to remind my child-they’re human-but to totally toss the responsibility and not even try

Yet WE are expected to assist with, correct, and expand upon our child homework nightly. WE are to read TO them nightly. WE are to do nightly speech homework. WE are to take them to the library. WE are to provide all remediation and tutoring. WE are to be sure they are clean and properly clothed for the weather.

We try to put any of that responsibility on our kids and we’re HORRIBLE parents!

A more subtle reminder might be an inexpensive watch with an alarm but I like the idea of a loud rendition of B_I_N_G_O coming over a cell myself ;)

How old is your daughter? The principal’s statement that she needs to remember on her own is an interesting one. If young children could remember everything on their own, they wouldn’t be young children.

On the other hand, teachers are very busy and distracted. What about having her wear a watch with a quiet buzzer alarm set to go off at the time she needs to leave for her writing session? Just a thought- Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. Cell phones and pagers are not permitted at school but a watch would be a good idea. She is in 5th grade now and had misplaced watches in her earlier years, maybe we can keep it on this time. She is telling time alot better now (thanks to a bulletin about telling time on this board) I am glad I had the teacher make me a schedule at the beginning of the school year otherwise I wouldn’t know what was going on.Hopefully, I can keep on top of this. I have wondered if it is ADD. She usually gets visually distracted but her tutors always get her back on track so they don’t think it’s an issue. We had tried a double blind test of Adderall but I hadn’t noticed any difference with the homework we did on weekends, and we didn’t finish the whole trial as sometimes she could not swallow the pill no matter what I hid it in. So even if it did work she wouldn’t swallow it.

ADDer’s can do pretty well one on one but when there are lots of things going on…they will lose things, lose track of time is a big one, forget appointments, assignments, etc…..

Perhaps the Adderall wasn’t the right med and it may not have been the right dosage…
