I will be piloting the Math-U-See program for my district next year. I will be using it in an elementary resource setting. I’d like to talk with anyone who has been using the curriculum in a public school setting for their feedback on pros and cons - as well as any tips.
Thanks in advance,

Re: Math-U-See - Public School
Chuck,
I’m using Math U See in public school. I think I already emailed you once and I am not at all an expert. I like it so far, but have much to learn. I see lots of light bulbs going on.

Hi Michelle,
Yes, I received your earlier email. Thank you. Could you help me with some additional questions:
1. Based on your experiences thus far, what challenges have you come up against while using the system? As I recall you taught resource in Arizona. I’ll be piloting the program for elementary age children in a resource setting. Functional levels for a given class will range from 1 to 4. I will have approximately 60 minutes per day with the students. I’m anticipating 10 students per class. Currently, I use learning centers a break the class up into 3 learning groups> I then provide direct teach, GP, and IP to each individual group on their levels. How would the Math-U-See program work with this type of scenario?
2. If you could change the program in any way how would you do it?
3. Do you have manipulative sets for all children to use?
4. Have you found that you need to supplement the manipulatives with others? If so, what did you need?
5. I teach in Texas and we have standardized testing at the end of the year for special ed populations. The test is known as the State Developed Alternative Assessment (SDAA). When I a compared the goals and objectives from a given grade to a given program in Math-U-See I observed that no one Math-U-See program covered all of the math objectives for a that grade. Essentially, this would mean that I will have to supplement the prorgram with addtional materials at each level. Have you also found the same problem?
6. Currently, I limited DT, GP, and IP to 10-15 minutes each, intorduce an active taching strategy, then repeat the cycle. I’ve found that by using this process I’m able to keep the kids focused and actively attentive. What is the maximum “task time” while using the Math-U-See program?
Thanks so much for your help. I found it very difficult to find many people who are using the program in public schools.
