OHI vs SLD, Whats the difference in an IEP?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Can someone please tell me why the IEP team does not want to recognize that my child was wrongly diagnosed with ADD in 1998 and in 2003 I had her re-evaluated by a psychologist that was highly recommended and was evaluated and diagnosed with dyslexia, dyscalcula, and dysgraphia and has borderline ADD? (by the way I always new this!)

Are the services different for OHI than SLD?
At the IEP meetings we discuss in detail what her needs are based on the new evaluation but there is not a word in the paperwork of this diagnosis and continuously it mentions of ADD.

The IEP has no real objectives or measures to go along with the goals, I’m currently educating myself on this as well.

Any Help is greatful!

I sortof encountered the same thing. My son had an ADD dx and was categorized OHI. A few months later I had him evaluated outside of school and he ended up with LDs - reading, writing, math. I brought the results back to the school and they said the new dx’s didn’t matter. They wouldn’t change his services. He was already receiving all the services they had to offer (1 hour of resource a day). That’s their maximum services for any child with an IEP, no matter the category. They said, “Oh, thanks for the report, but we’re already doing everything we can.”

One size fits all, you know.

I didn’t freak out too much about it bec my son was already lined up to attend a private LD school the next year (for 3rd grade). Course, when he entered that LD school (this year) he was determined to be at a late Kindergarten level on reading and writing. So, I would say the public school’s 1 hour day resource service wasn’t too effective for my son, huh?

Yeah, that’s the same thing I was told but the goals and objectives don’t really apply to the dyslexic part of the disablility (not much anyway) That’s why I’m researching IEP’s for myself and trying to write goals and objectives that pertain to the type of instruction the doc suggested.

Thanks for your input.

Oh, the goals and objectives, well, in our case they still sounded okay even though he turned out to be also LD. There was no re-writing the IEP to specify programs bec they had no programs to specify. So I couldn’t say, “Must be taught using LindaMood Bell” bec they didn’t offer that. What they offered, I had. One hour a day of resource.

I hope you get better results than I did!

Services are based on goals, and goals are based on assessment and the child’s needs. So the services could be the same regardless of the category. However, the thing to look at are the goals and whether the reading, writing, and math issues are being addressed. For the record, I would want the IEP changed to the proper category
