I am wondering if any of you carry professional liability insurance. I have always been covered by school districts, but I am wondering if I need a private practice type policy for testing and tutoring privately.
Thanks,
Janis
Re: question for professional tutors
I’m currently not carrying insurance (other than homeowner’s) and haven’t really thought about doing so.

I have professional liability insurance
I got it through ASHA for less than $100 for a 2 million dollar policy…Hopefully I never have to use it
Re: question for professional tutors
I also don’t carry insurance outside of homeowners. I’ve thought about looking into it, but haven’t as of yet. I don’t have anyone sign contracts, my business is purely pay as you go, so I think there’s a limit as to what I could be sued for in terms of malpractice. If they don’t like me, they don’t have to show up!
Re: question for professional tutors
keb,
I was also thinking that the most likely reason a tutor would be sued is if they make guarantees of improvement which they do not achieve. I would never do that, so I’m not really sure what they would sue a tutor for.

Re: question for professional tutors
I didn’t know how to answer this question because I didn’t know what my householder’s insurance covered. It has so far never been an issue. But this week due to a comedy of errors (again) I had to change to a different company that would give a more realistic (much lower!) house evaluation.
I was asked about my self-employment, and apparently my new policy covers me up to two million dollars in damage either here or in the client’s home, and also covers loss or damage to materials in my car. I had a choice and put ot at two hundred deductible. The whole thing is costing me less than fifty dollars a year. If you are concerned, check into a rider on your householder’s policy.
I’ve been tutoring out of an office in my home for 5 years. Up til now, I cover myself under our homeowner’s liability insurance for any “physical” accidents that may occur. I have been encouraged to get liablity insurance from other teachers, though I’ve fortunately, have never had a parent that I’ve been concerned about suing. It is discouraging, because after paying 30% off the top already for taxes, it is really hard to charge enough in my area to stay on top of all of the overhead.
