test results

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Can anyone explain to me why my 11 yo Dau had WISC III score drop 4 years after the original testing? She was VIQ 99, PIQ 99, FS 99 4 years ago and this past year (last month) was VIQ97, PIQ 87,FS 92. Can’t get straight answer from school psych and haven’t been back to the neuro psych yet. Thanks

Erin

I’d say that test scores are only a vague reflection of a child - they’re not written in stone and they’re not the “bible truth’ - do you see your daughter’s abilities as less than they were when she first took the test?

A multitude of factors can explain changes in test scores - whether they go up or down - and most of those factors can’t quite be pinned down. How well did the administrator administrate the test? That can change from day to day much less from person to person. Was it an ‘off’ day for the child taking the test? That can happen. Was it scored properly?

The reality is that unless you see a decline in your daughter’s abilities the test scores aren’t really accurate of one.

Good luck.

Perhaps someone more expert will chime in, but I suspect that the changes you see are not significant. On the WISC, one standard deviation equals 15 points. A change that is less than one standard deviation probably doesn’t signify that anything has really changed. An IQ score reflects one particular day, but if the test were given at regular intervals you would not always see 100. Instead you would probably see a range of scores, say 92-106. These kinds of small differences are normal and don’t mean there is a problem.

As a child ages the WISC penalizes on the PIQ for lack of speed. This factor alone can cause a drop in PIQ. A child with visual-motor problems will more likely have a drop in the PIQ over time.

I would say the differences are probably not significant, both are in the average range(90-110)…and the P difference is that she didn’t get extra “credit” for speed. Is her school performance(?5th or 6th grade?) in the average ballpark? Kids in school tend to function at the level of their verbal score as school is heavily verbally laden. If the first testing was at 7-8 yrs old, that IQ is not cast in stone; it is more accurate as kids get older.
