Device that scans a page & reads it ? Where to buy this

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I remember someone on this forum talking about a device that scans a page and reads it out loud. There was also a pen that read individual words. Has anyone tried these? Does anyone know where they are sold? :?:

Mandy,
There are a number of different software programs that have built in optical character recognition (OCR) and text-to-speech capabilities for scanning and reading. It depends upon the needs of the child because the different software programs have their own unique features. What does your child’s IEP team recommend from their consideration of assistive technology?

Mandy, We bought the Quicktionary II Reading Pen for our son. The pen is fine, but our son was too young and neither patient nor gentle with it. Also, he was so under-remediated at the time that he was having to scan way too many words. So it didn’t get much use. I forgot where we bought the pen, but if you typed Quicktionary II in Google I bet you’d find it. I don’t know the name of the other device, but I’m pretty sure that Jonathan Mooney talks about a similar gadget in his book (the name of which I think is Learning Outside the LInes.)

There are two very well known computer programs-Kurzweil 3000 and WYNN that are scan readers. Kurzweil has come out with new more human sounding voices-I’m not sure about WYNN however they will send you a demo copy of their program. My school district is considering purchasing TestTalker that is produced by the same company as WYNN. The school district currently uses Kurzweil 3000 for the scan reader though. My dau uses Kurzweil and it has worked well for her. These are rather pricey programs but well worth the money!
