Recommeded Writing Programs

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi.. MY 3rd grader has dysgraphia although he gets RR at school, they are
not working with any specific writing program

I’ve read alot about Step Up to Writing on here
but was hoping for some names of other programs for struggling
writers. My son is writing on a 1st- 2nd grade level.

Thank you

Hi Susan,
I use the computer program Inspiration along with Step Up to Writing and I have taught many dysgrapics how to write using the computer. One boy is a senior this year and last year he had a hard time writing a sentence and this year he wrote me a 5 page research paper that was quite good. Go to Inspiration.com and look it over.

You might also look into word prediction software such as C0:writer. Neither Inspiration nor Co:Writer will teach specific writing skills, but both are excellent at helping children overcome writing difficulties. Inspiration helps children organize their thoughts before writing. Co:Writer supplies word choices, which helps children generate sentences and assists them with spelling and grammar.

There is a thread on the Reading Board entitled Reading/Writing Connection which has some discussion on this issue that you may find helpful. The last post is dated 5/14/03.

Another great software is DraftBuilder, which includes auditory spellcheck, reads the paragraphs to the student and also has templates for organization, i.e., Book reports: Q: Who is the Author; Q: What was the problem in the book; Q: How was it resolved?

It “walks the student through an organizaed form. It has a outline, notes and draft section. Also can help with bibliographies when the child gets older.

My daughter uses it for all her book reports and research papers. We have learned to use the bibliography this Summer so she can use it for her research paper next year.

I just did a quick search on the above but they sell it.

Try www.inspiration.com for a free 30 day trial. They also have kidspirations for yournger kids you can try both to see if you like the format for your child.

I have not heard about Step Up to Reading, but if you are thinking about Step Up To Writing, then go to www.stepuptowriting.com or www.sopriswest.com

I just saw your questions, didn’t check the original post you are questioning BUT that is software that has it’s own website. It is wonderful for LD kids if you are special ed. there is also a kidspiration which eaiser and younger looking icon library for kids to use. I have both and use it regularly.
