Relational vocabulary

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Does anyone know what the relational vocabulary subtest of the TOLD-P:3
measures? My daughter bombed this particular subtest (1st percentile)
but score 75% in the picture vocabulary subtest and 91% in the oral
vocabulary subtest. Any ideas out there on what this would indicate?
What kind of questions are on this relational vocab. subtest?
Thanks!

I believe that relational vocabulary asks questions like, “How are a banana and an apple alike?” The child would repsond with things like, they are both fruit, both grow on trees, both have a peel, etc.
My child also did poorly on that subtest the first time she was given the TOLD (2%ile). When she was retested this spring, she was at the 25th%ile.

Janis,
My son performed poorly on this as well. What did you do to help remediate this deficiency? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I think that teaching vocabulary in categories is the most helpful thing. That way, you can discuss how things are similar and different and how items are related. I am sure there are products available from speech-language companies like Lingui-Systems or Super Duper which would help with this.
