Interests, sports

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi everyone,
I have an ADHD girl and have had no problems finding enriching things for her to do that build her self-confidence. I have an ADHD nephew that doesn’t have any interests and his mom is concerned about this. He is has not enjoyed team sports. His Dad doesn’t want him to do anything too “girly” but would be OK with unisex type activities. The child actually has many friends that are girls. He’s a great child, very affectionate.

One activity that has worked out great for my dd is Theater Camp so I’m going to suggest that.

A lot of times, team sports are hard for these kids, since they often get teased or become aggressive when hurt or offended. I would suggest looking into some individualized sports where he can work on his skills without having to work with teammates. Tetherball was a big one for my oldest, trampoline for my youngest. Tennis, track/running, swimming, all don’t require team communication, and might work better. Arts and crafts are also workable, but it has to be something that they are interested in.

Good luck!

I’m a fan of scouting because it has that ‘team’ feel while offering such a range of activities everyone fits in at some point

My oldest preferred playing with girls for a long time. The aggression level of the typical boy was just too much for him. He was ready to discuss the issue and they were bonking him over the head!

It changed over eventually, but he will never be the type who engages in towel snapping locker room ‘fun’.
