Where to find a tutor?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I live in Canada. Is there a certain place you can find “private Tutors” who will come the the house and do a one-on-one service for kids who have reading disabilities. I know in my area, there are ton’s of different programs / private schools, which I have been too. But I am searching for tutors who would be knowledgabel with PG, OG, LiPS, VV and just the basic beginnings of sounds.
I know there is a website for private SLP’s in my area, and I thought that maybe there would be a website for private tutors. I am Calgary Alberta if that matters.

Thanks

You can email Readamerica for a list of PG tutors in your area. The tutors listed on their website are only those who have paid for the listing. There may be others in your area.

Try iser.com; don’t know if they have anyone in Calgary yet.
— city information websites; I advertise in a Montreal website and get most of my referrals from there. Do various searches with Calgary and other words such as tutor, classified, community, reading, etc., and collect information.
— physical bulletin boards in universities and in local shopping malls.
— neighbourhood weekly newspapers.
— yellow pages.

For all of these, BUYER BEWARE. Question the tutor about background knowledge and teaching style. Don’t sign a long-term contract until you see how the tutor works with your child. On the other hand, tutoring is not an overnight magic thing, it’s a long-term commitment, so give the tutor a few weeks to get the rpocess rolling.

If I lived in Calgary, I’d certainly try The Reading Foundation. Dr. Steve Truch certainly is well respected in the field of dyslexia.
