We are on day 6 of the 8 day test on the AVKO website. I like this program and he very much likes to correct his own work. He misses 3 or 4 each time.
How will I know if he can generalize what he learns through this program to writing paragraphs. It seems like he can pass the spelling tests he’s had at school but then reverts to spelling words like they sound when he has to write anything else.
He didn’t pass the Spelling through Morphographs test. He’s 10 going into 5th grade and spelling on a second grade level.
Let me know what you guys think. Thanks, Caran
I’m using the AVKO lists with a couple of really lost students; was using it with a third but he took off for summer work. With all three of these students, it is really striking a chord. For the first time in their lives spelling makes some kimd of sense and they have an idea of why they write what they do. All three of these have so many problems in so many areas I just started right on in on AVKO adult list 1 and went from there — two or three lsits a session, trying to get four or five per week.
Although none of them is writing totally correct paragraphs or even sentences, yes, I am seeing excellent transfer. Much less “alphabet-soup” spelling, and more correctable errors like leaving out part of a blend or using the wrong short vowel or omitting a silent e or using the wrong choice of long vowel patterns — things you can discuss reasonably and actually teach.
I’ve only had a month of work, twice a week, with the AVKO with each of these students, and am already seeing good transfer, so I suspect that if we can keep it up for a year the major spelling problem should be resolved.
