should I have him tested?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Last year in public school my 7 year old was having difficulties in the classroom. At the end of the year we got the paper work for an IEP assessment. Within 50 days after school starts they have to start assessing him, which could take a couple months. Half the year is gone and my poor boy will be drowning in class.

We privately had him tested and found out he has language, auditory, memory and vision processing problems. We chose to pull him out of public school and put him in a small private school with small class size to start remediating.

My question is do we still go ahead with the IEP assessment? My husband thinks having it on his record could possibly hurt him sometime down the road, like applying to other private schools. Any thoughts on this?
I’d personally like to compare the findings, and have it in the event he goes back to public. Any suggestions????

Thanks!

I guess I am of two minds about this. If your child continues to have problems and falls further behind in school, then having the *label* will make sure he gets the services that he needs. However, I can see your point about it could possibly hurt him. On this note, I have never heard of anyone being hurt by having the testing done and getting the *label* (schools don’t like to have *labels*, they say it hurts the child, however it just means that they have to put some work into it, but I’m not bitter).

I guess the best thing that I could recommend is looking at the pros and cons for both sides. Is this something that you can remediate at home without involving the school? Is he going to need help in the classroom? The answers to these questions should help you decide which route you need to take.

Good luck!
