Could someone help me with this. I’m really trying to understand the difference between auditory processing and language processing problems.
For example we were just in the store and my 7 yr old was talking to the clerk and she asked him if he wanted a job. He replied no I want a dog. What happened here? Is that an auditory or language problem?
please help.
Re: auditory or language processing problem?
A good source for learning more about auditory processing is the book “When the Brain Can’t Hear.” You may be able to check it out from your local library or glance through it at a local book store.
I’m not an expert here, but my guess would be that the example you gave is definitely language rather than auditory.
Auditory would involve not hearing the words properly, answering the wrong question, answering part of the question rather than the whole, misreading attempts at humour and taking things wrong because of not getting the tone, etc.
He heard the message, understood the question, and answered it. The answer made sense in his world view, even if it seems off the wall to others.
This seems more language based, that he doesn’t get the context of the question and what would be an appropriate answer by common social standards.
