child shuts down when upset

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Ok, one more daycare incident. My daughter accidently went into boys locker room at swimming pool field trip, kids laughed and she went into girls locker room and wouldn’t come out for a long time. It is a safety issue for the daycare as they don’t have enough staff to watch her.She told me what happened but she won’t talk more about it. I was trying to talk about trying to get over the issue so life can go on, and about my own humiliations, but she just doesn’t want to talk about it. This shutting down is becoming quite an issue when she gets upset. I have let the school know what has been going on this summer so they can hopefully curtail it from happening there. The girl she was having problems with at daycare is in the same learning support room both 6th graders. I just don’t know what I can do to help my child not shut down completely. The situations were understandable as to why she shut down, but they are hard to deal with as she does not want to talk to anyone and wants to be alone, which is hard to do in a class or daycare situation, and I could barely handle these calls at work, this summer has been emotionally exhausting.

Does your daughter have any friends at her daycare? Is she being teased or bothered by anyone? It sounds to me like she may be depressed. I think if it were me, I’d probably want to research some type of therapy or even group therapy situation. A good friend of mine has her daughter attending a teen group through her church. She told me it has really helped her daughter through some hard times.

With school starting again I am hoping she will find new friends. The one she did have at the daycare moved. I am letting her do a drop in scenerio where she will have more”freedom”, unless problems occur and then I may have to find a new daycare. Group therapy sounds like a good idea as one on one with her has not been going to well. Thanks for the ideas-
