please let me know if you think this article has any merit. It does a good job of explaining why a child like my DS, with a low coding score (1) and a high digit span (15) probably doesn’t have ADHD. It also lends weight to the idea that he doesn’t have auditory processing issues - which we have always believed to be the case, but sometimes you gotta wonder when he exhibits “selective hearing”. All in all, it backs up some of the conclusions we’ve come to .

The WISC IV has dealt with many of the problems in the interpretation of the freedom from dist. index-the indexes are different; search on google for some articles on the new WISC and they may point out that this is a good test for your son if diagnostic questions still persist.

Great article…backs up my interpretation of my kiddo’s WISC III results, as opposed to the knee-jerk analysis of ADD the school psych was SO sure about…but adds to my own conundrum: Do you think someone could have processing problems with math and counting ONLY — not language?

My amateur gut says ‘yes’ — but then I get stuck, with no theory or knowledge to back up that gut…

Thanks again, Karen N, you’ve opened up a fascinating new area of possibility in learning what puzzle pieces we are still missing in understanding my son’s needs!

My pleasure! I stumbled across it after having a conversation with a friend who happens to be a child psychiatrist. She said she’d never seen a child with a coding subtest score as low as my son who wasn’t ADD, but had never seen a digit span as high as his in a kid who is! so it got me started surfing the internet again!

I suspect we’ll have DS retested this year in order to get him classified. Will be eager to see the results and share with you all.
