School evaluation request

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have a 15 yr. son with adhd. I need advice for getting help from the school system instead of him being suspended for behavior problems. I am requesting a evaluation for section 504. Any other suggestions to get their support.

Every school district is going to be different, is your son’s school voluntarily going through with testing? I recommend you start a sort of journal, where you chart your son’s behavior at home when he’s with you. Also, do your homework on the subject of adhd. If you have a good understanding of the process, you’ll be a good advocate for your son. Try this for a start: http://www.helpforadd.com/services.htm

Good luck, and let us know how it goes! :)

Follow up and follow up. Don’t assume that they will do anything or do it in a reasonable time frame. Be assertive but also as nice as you can so they know you mean business. Research and educate yourself and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Be prepared to do whatever you have to. Make a folder or file and make notes. Document everything, save everything and keep it in the folder. Think in advance and discuss with the dr what you think should be in the 504. If it’s like my district they may “negotiate” some wording or not like some of the accommodations. Other districts are much more open and helpful. Also, if you know exactly who to talk to and can actually speak to that person/people it helps. Maybe find out who the 504 coordinator for the school is and try to get the guidance counselor as an ally. It seemed like such an easy thing when I started the process but for us it was not! Good luck! I truly hope you are in a more helpful district.
