helping a friend

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

A good friend of many years is having trouble with her son. He is 6 years old, hyper and oppositional but doesn’t have any DX. We were travelling together recently and he kept climbing on things he wasn’t supposed to. After yet another person told him to get off yet of another thing he wasn’t supposed to be climbing, I said, “you’ll have to excuse him, he has a climbing disorder.” I don’t think anyone was very amused by what I said but you have to understand that I have a son who is autistic and has had the market cornered on innnapropriate behavior on many occassions. Anyway, my friend and I started talking about some of the struggles she’s having with her son. Truthfully, they look and sound pretty serious. I told her I’d see if I could find some information for her. Can anyone recommend any good books for her to read?

Instead of a book to read (there are so many), why not suggest she talk to her son’s pediatrician about her questions? I don’t really think it’s a good idea to try to diagnose what’s wrong on your own. When I first approached our pediatrician about what my dd’s teacher had been sharing w/me about problems, he blew a gasket…obviously had some issues there. Switched dr’s, and got a referral to a psychologist for testing. I started reading books after I knew what to read about.
