teen girl with LD and spech issues

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi, I have a 13 YR girl w/ mild brain damage at birth. She has LD and Speach issues. She has an IEP and receives loads of special services at school; however, she has no friends and is ignored by all peer groups. Is there a site for her to use that can put her in touch with others like herself?

I am a speech pathologist who works with kids who have brain damage. I was thinking about pen pals. Would that be something you would be interested in doing?

If there is one thing that I have learned from having an ld daughter is that you need to find other diversions for her outside of school. If there is something that she does well outside of school—athletics, music, drama club, dance, building things, a kennel club where she can take the family dog to obedience trials, anything that will alleviate the alienation she is experiencing at school—find it. If she isn’t getting the validation that she needs from school, then she may need it from other sources.

The school system where my daughter currently attends, does not seem to have the segregational attitude towards ld kids that I have heard and seen from parents of students who attend neighboring districts. This works to my daughter’s advantage. I know of at least two children whose families live close to the border of our school district who have opted to enroll their children in our school district just to escape the social ostracism and feel more welcome—is this a possibility for you?
