Working on social skills during recess

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’m a cross categorical special education teacher at the elementary level who goes out for recess every day. This is a great time to see my students interact socially and provide support when necessary. I’m looking for ideas on helping my kiddos who don’t have many friends learn how to make friends and have fun at recess. All stories and suggestions welcome.

We have a system called “Circle of Friends” in which we gather specific children along with their “normal” peers and provide activities for them to do such as board games, holiday orientated activities, bubbles, chalk etc. This entices the typical children to play with the children in need and can be in a structured setting while still maintaining the flow of the interaction. Data can accumulated and observation of mastery of skills can be determined in a natural setting.
