I’m trying to help a teacher who has a student who is gifted, ODD + ADHD in the regular classroom (upper elementary). Does not complete work, constantly dirsrupts class w/ talking, wandering around, inappropriate behavior that others think is funny. I know the hallmark of ODD is annoying others deliberately— any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Re: Gifted, ODD + ADHD Strategies?
MEDICATE!
Excuse me for my outburst. I am sick and tired of these children, who could be helped enormously with the proper meds, having to spend their lives as the one who is always in trouble, the one who always sits up by the teacher, alone. Etc. I have a boy who probably needs meds, he is a sweet boy who cannot keep his mouth shut and cannot sit with other students to save his life. So, he gets to be the one who is isolated and frequently reminded (reprimanded, he isn’t even consciously aware of his disruptive impulsivity). This fellow gets to grow up thinking he never does anything right all because parents won’t even consider ADHD.
I agree
He is on meds, but family situation makes him the one responsible for remembering to take them. A lot for a preteen, even if he is brilliant.

I’ve found the best thing to do at times is to simply assign this type of student and individual assignment with desinated parameters. Often this type of student will work well on a project independently.
