Financial Assistance

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have a seven year old daughter who I adopted at birth. She has recently been diagnosed by a Neuropsychologist with and LD, ADHD, LD and a memory disorder. My question is with all of the extra tutoring that I am paying for and medications and not to mention the cost of the assessment; I was wondering if this diagnosis qualified her for any kind of disability benefits.

I am new to this and I have learned a great deal from this website for which I am thankful. She is receiving services in her public school but this is almost nothing to what she needs.

I would appreciate any and all advice or information. Thank you for your time.

The only reimbursement I get is from a pre-tax account I have set up at work for medical expenses. We have spent $1,000’s of $$ on hearing aids, tutoring, speech therapy, private school etc…and my child doesn’t get any disability benefits.

The only thing that I can think of that may be provided for a child with disabilities is via the department of Vocational Rehabilitation. Kids in high school may qualify for Vocational Rehabilitation to pay for educational expenses after high school to be trained for a job to support themselves.

Some educational / medical expenses can be tax deductible if your child is special needs. I don’t know the particulars, but I do know people that have taken advantage of this fact.
