Does anyone know if schools are required by law to provide tutoring. My son’s student handbook states that a child not meeting the essential elements will recieve tutoring. However, I am having a hard time getting tutoring for him at school. Thank you for any help! :)
Re: Tutoring
No he doesn’t have an IEP but we will be having an ARD meeting next week. I’m having a hard time getting him the help he should be getting in school. The teacher is tutoring him 10-15 min. on Mon. & Tues. which to me is better than nothing. I wish it were more. The pediatrician has filled out an Other Health Impairment form for ADHD and suggests assignment mods & more time. This school is notorious with not helping students even though their own handout states that tutoring will be provided when a student is failing a subject matter. It’s like pulling teeth. I will make sure that tutoring me on the IEP. Thanks for your posting! Any advice always helps. :)
Re: Tutoring
Just a word of advice from experience. If your shool district offers you a 504 Plan instead of an IEP, don’t except the 504. I was lulled into accepting the 504, only to find out that it only offers accomodations to be made in the classroom -extra test time/work time. It does not offer any special education services, such as tutoring. It also does not have any objectives as to the areas of improvement and what plans will be taken to meet these objectives. Try to educate yourself on what should be in an IEP and then bring some suggestions as to what you would like to see in your childs IEP. They should include your suggestions and you must agree and sign off on the IEP. Good luck.
Does your son have an IEP? Schools are required to follow the IEP and its provisions (sometimes they don’t but they’re supposed to)
A tutor can be written into an IEP.
