High School , taking away the strength through weakness

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My Daughter has Dyslexia, her reading and spelling level is way below her grade level. Throughout the years I have tried to fight the system but have only realized that it dose not work and the stress for both of us is not worth the battle. She is currently in 11 grade . Her strength is Art, the problem now is that there is such a push for stride for excellence that there is so much pressure on the Teachers. Teachers now have to incorporate reading and righting into all classes including Gym. Students now have to take exams in Gym , art , and all electives This has added so much stress to Learning Disabled students. There is nothing to look forward to all day at school , no get away from your weakness, no stress reliever anymore. My daughter dose well on all hands on work in Art , then there is the written work that is added , it consist of reading righting, and test . I was looking through all her paperwork for Art , her grades ranged from 30 ‘s to 70 ‘s for test and research. So now her strength has also become her weakness. So tell me what this dose do her self Esteme and her love for Art? The push for stride for excellence is stripping Learnig Disabled students strengths and turning the strengths of being Dysxexic into failure.

Maybe they should incorporate art and PE into math and history classes instead! My sympathies! That’s one reason we homeschooled or used alternative schools. One size does NOT fit all when it comes to education!
