homework help

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I need help in getting my 8th grader to do his homework. Not a new problem. I have tried of course sitting with him and helping, taking away priviliges, explaing why we have to do homework, letting him not do it and face the consequences at school which are staying in at lunch to do it.
or getting a failing mark.

He is pretty good at doing his resourse work not always but quite often.

his science, history, geo, is way to hard for him. I have explained this to his regular teacher but he doesn’t get it.

I don’t know what to do anymore for this it is to the point of making him fake an illness to come home at lunch. Regular class in the afternoon.

thanks charlene

Is the homework too hard or just a burden? If he has an IEP, maybe he could have modified homework, or do it in study. Will he go to a regular academic high school next year? This is the time to sit down and plan, since without an IEP he may not get promoted and progress with his friends if he fails courses because the homework isn’t done. Does he expect to graduate from hs and get a diploma? Maybe a meeting with him, school counselor, parents would help with this decision.

My 8th grader with ld is in reg. ed. and has a lot of homework as well as long term projects. Many of his peers just don’t do the homework until they get detention, but pass the courses because they do OK on tests. I don’t think not doing homework is unique to students in special ed.; it’s that age kid. But starting next yr, these kids know they will go to summer school if they don’t pass a course they need to graduate high school.

That is why he is not doing his homework. He already believes that he cannot achieve because he is not receiving the help he needs to be successful in these classes. Why would any sane person be inspired to come home and do more of the same awful work? In addition to the IEP route, it is possible that a tutor could be helpful, especially if you also found a willing high school student to serve as an afterschool homework buddy.

Yes he has had an IPRC and IEP since grade 2. He just started doing geo and history last year. The IEP says modified work for these subjects his regular teacher says you cant modify these subjects he has to do the work. Reading the text and then trying to ansewer questions is beyond him.
The teacher will write on his tests that certain parts were covered in class on the board and he should be able to remember this work.
He has severe short term memory problems.

This teacher also says that kids that are not up to grade 8 work should not be in the regular class.

My son does not want to spend his whole day in resource. He wants to be with his friends. He has really low self esteem already. Its not good for him in this regular class but being secluded would also be a bad situation.
There is only 1 grade 8 teacher.
His comprehension is 9th% grade 3.5
story recall is 11th% grade 2.8
letter word identification 18th% grade 4.7

We just need to get through this year. For grade 9 we have applied to a tech high school in the city. Hopefully they will accept him.

I dont know if it would be better to just pick him up after lunch.
Can he pass grade 8 without taking these subjects.
I don’t want to give him the message that you can just quit trying either.
I am rambling on sorry.
