Preparing the ld child for adulthood

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi hoping that someone out there can help me. My son has had a really difficult go at school, friends ect. I am trying to think of ways to help him develop his self esteem. I am working with the school at putting him in some work experience. Hoping that this will help with self esteem, ect. Has anyone tried this. What is your experience? I just think he will not be able to go to school anymore because of the bullying ect. I want something for him to look forward to, rather than abuse at school. Does anyone know of websites ect that has some ideas how to help this happen. Suggestions please.

From a tired worried parent :(

You haven’t said how old your son is. I commend you for seeking an activity for your son that will be a positive experience. as one parent said here once ” Thank god for swim team”. for us it has been horseback riding. I support your decision to find positive experiences but you need to do battle with the negative.

Bullying is horrific, corrosive stuff. It is a product of the culture of the school. Once the bullying has been allowed to take place - its tough to stop. But it is the school’s responsibility to MAKE it stop. It requires real leadership on the part of the admin. However, since Columbine there is a not a school that has not heard of its responsibility in this area. Most states have materials and programs for them to use. I particularly like Dr. Michael Thompson on the subject. Do a web search for him. He has also written Raising Cain. He travels and speaks widely on the bullying and what to do about it. bullying.org has a lot of links. But your state dept of ed probably has already put together everything the school needs to begin an awareness and change of attitude program.

The school needs to wake up fast. They are playing around with dangerous stuff. And it is definitely their responsibily to change the culture of their school.
