Safety issues for ADD students in shop and home economics cl

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

ADD kids run a greater risk of being injured in these classes and vocational classes. Are schools taking measures to insure their safety and do they acknowledge that these hids are at greater risk for injury? This is a loaded question for the school due to liabilty issues and may force the school to admit the student is disabled.

His ADD most be somewhat under control but what about other student that are ADD or LD. They could be a risk to themselves and others. We had a student forget the steps in a welding procedure. We narrowly avoided a disaster.Forgetting to put on safety glasses. Being distracted while operating a power saw. These situations are dangerous. I believe ADD puts kids at high risk in these situations. At the risk of raining on some proud moms parade I think safety should be a major concern for kids who are ADD and or medicated operating dangerous equipment. It make sense for the school to evaluate a students ability not to be distracted when in those locations. Would a machine shop hire a machinist who admitted he was taking medication because he had trouble paying attention? This is just another example of how the schools care less about kids. Ain’t the truth bitter?
