Hi, I’m a first time poster.
I will be 45 years old this august. I still can’t keep a job!
I finally found my niche as a new media designers after half a lifetime of struggle. You see, I never thought I could amount to anything. I had plenty of feedback to strengthen this view of myself.
To make a long story short, I did go to college later in life (late 20s early 30s) and graduated with a BA in Communication arts. I got a B average. I made the Dean’s List once, and the honor’s roll twice.
For ten years after graduation I could not enter a career. Finally I did.
But I can’t keep the jobs I get. I have a decent portfolio. I get good pay today. I can ask between $35.00 to $40.00 an hour. But I can’t keep a job. They say I work too slow!
A month ago today, on May 13th 2005 I lost the best job I ever had. Why? Because after almost a year of working there they decided I was too slow! One year and one day before this, on May 12th 2004 I lost another job! Why? Because I was too slow! They liked my work, but I was taking too long.
Anyway, thanks for letting me vent. Oh yeah, I probably have ADD. I can’t seem to focus. I think I might also have that learning disability that makes it hard to write.
lost job at 45.....
Hello. I wonder, what techniques did you do to keep track of your deadlines, and when meetings were to be held? How did you try to pace your work? Did you have a plan to meet with your boss 3 times before the project was due? I am 42, and work part time at a university in
north New Jersey USA ( up to 20 hours a week ); and collect a Govt. income also. It is an effort *just* to keep a job!!!! I work for 15 professors and 1 secretary. ( It is an office job; and I also write/create webpages). Maybe a visit to your local Office of Vocational Rehabilitation might help; get some guidance.
Good luck. Let us know how you progress.

Re: Can't keep a job at 45!! (First Time Poster)
Thank you A Person and Joetag.
A Person, I really do like your handle. It’s something I would think of.
Joetag, I’m from Northern, NJ too.
Yes, I do have to come up with some sort of way to keep track of the work I do. I can’t go on losing jobs.
The crazy thing is, I am good at what I do. I have a very good artistic eye. It’s a parodox. I can’t keep a job! It’s heart breaking and sickening.
But I do know I will overcome this.
Please keep in touch.
..
At least the jobs you’ve lost are complicated jobs where you have to show some intelligence in order to work there. Imagine getting fired from a Home Depot because you were considered to be “slow”, that hurts way more than getting fired from a job of consequence

A Person, I lost other jobs too. Other jobs that were far less complicated.
Believe you me, I’ve been through the mill on most of my jobs. I’ve been called every word in the book, including, “stupid, retarted, idiot, asshole, mentally ill…” an all that nice stuff.
And yes, I have lost job! It look me a long, long time to get where I am today. And I’m still losing the damn jobs.
Heck, if i can make it so can you!!! You just have to work hard.
YOU CAN DO IT!

I suggest you go to this webpage, and find the NJ offic of VRS
( Vocational Rehab. ) that is nearest to you. Remember,
New Jersey Transit has a decent web-site, if you need to get there
by public transportation ( bus or train ) .

Please keep me posted.

Re: Can't keep a job at 45!! (First Time Poster)
Joe.tag thanks for the link. I will look into it, I promise!
Re: Can't keep a job at 45!! (First Time Poster)
Atter reading this thread I have to wonder how many other “lost geniuses” there are out there. Frankly, it burns my butt to think about it because with a little thoughtful accomodation we would have far less “Lost Geniuses” dealing with lost jobs and lost self-esteem.
I suppose the lost geniuses of the world could seek help from their state voc rehab offices but I think losing jobs and self-esteem is enough. State VR will take their dignity too.
LG, is there anyway you can become self employed or are you already. I don’t really understand what you do.
Re: Can't keep a job at 45!! (First Time Poster)
Hi Jerry,
I was kind of self employed. I guess I lost my big client.
I do web design. I specialize in Flash. I have been doing flash design since 2000. However, there were a few years when I could not get work. It was real hard.
I got my LLC (Limited Liability Corporation), last year at another contractor’s suggestion. So I guess I am self employed. However, I would love to continue doing the web design (even print design but I dont’ have that much experience with it), and continue in the field I am in. It was a long, painful road to get there. I went through a lot of therapy. But I am here. Making good money, but not able to keep a job. It hurts like hell!!
Thanks for caring. I know I will get there. If I made it this far I know I will overcome whatever is holding me back. I know this is true for ALL OF US, AS WELL!!!!
Like Henry Winkler said in his interview online “Just because a person has a learning challenge, doesn’t mean they don’t have greatness i them.” It is so true.
Oh, how I felt the drunken sorrow of feeling stupid growing up. It was so painful.
Re: Can't keep a job at 45!! (First Time Poster)
Joe.tag I just called the organization you suggested. They are sending me information.
Thanks for the link.
Lost job, and resources....
I am sending you a Private Message. Please respond to it ( log in and read it ) . Thank you.

You may have to get creative from a business and promotions point of view. Is there some niche within the design field that you can specailize in that would make your disablilty less of a liability?
Have you considered or found any sort of neuro rehab like neuro feedback therapy?
Is your work enviroment free from distractions?
The SBA small business administration may have some programs for disable person owned businesses. You may want to check and see if there are programs for disabled business owners. Women and minority owned businesses get special treatment when bidding on government contracts. Perhaps there is a business incubator that could give you some help.
The other thing may be that not evertime you lose a contract it is your fault. Business can be sleazy at times. Maybe you you seek different clients.
In your spare time you may want to look into marketing online. Afterall you already know how to design websites. Someonnear and deat to my was able to get a licencing agreement with the company who makes the Flat Hose and he made a killing selling it on the net. Maybe you should partner up with somebody like that..
I hope that was helpful.

Re: Can't keep a job at 45!! (First Time Poster)
Joe.tag I tried to send you a private message twice, but it got stuck in my outbox. I guess this forum does not like macs too much.
I will try again.
Re: Can't keep a job at 45!! (First Time Poster)
Actually the forum seems to be having trouble with private messages — I got a notification that I had one but it disappeared into the ether. Just a technical glitch, should get fixed soon — I notified the board operations folks. Nothing to do with you or with your computer, honest.
I’m extremely sorry to hear that, I know exactly how you feel and I know how hard it is as well.
I hope you don’t give up finding another job that’s up your ally. I guess it’s all about the fit, maybe there is some place out there where you will have better luck.
