Hello, Hello,
I just received my Math-U-See order. Now what do I do? Just show the appropriate video segment and set them loose?
Thank you,
Clueless Caron
P.S. Thank God I know how to teach reading!!
Re: Math U See
No, YOU watch the video and learn how to teach it. Basically it is in appropriate sequence, though as Sue mentions, many students need many more practice elements.
The order goes about like this:
You demo a specific proceedure.
They do the proceedure the way you did it.
Then you add elements of writing gradually, for example, writing numerals etc, until they do the whole thing in writing.
Then you have them do written problems using the blocks as a check
(after very much practice).
(At least I believe that’s the basic order.)
If you have questions or problems, MathUSee folks are happy to help out either by phone or email.

What we ended up doing...
Technically, you are supposed to watch the video to see how to teach it. However, I have found that most of the time, showing the video to the students is sufficient for introducing the concept to them. Many don’t need any additional explanation. To check understanding, I would stop the video as SOON as he posted a practice problem on the board. (after he’d taught how to work that type of problem). I would have the students work the problem, then we’d “check our answers” as he worked through the rest of the practice problem. By doing this, I was able to see if students were getting it, or not.
After you and the students have watched the teaching video, if there are students who don’t understand, you can work with the manipulatives and extra examples in the teacher’s guide if needed. Then, have the students work the page in the workbook. It worked tremendously for us and we had wonderful progress.

Yes, give that a shot. Then be ready to find extra practice for the computation skills (I’ve found if I type in “addition worksheet” or something like that online I can usually find some, but I do have to look through it and make sure it’s not going beyond the level I want).
And come back & tell us what happens :-)
