Question re: High School Transcript & Admission NJ

Homeschooling families generate their own transcripts. If you make one with the classes you remember taking and rough guesses of your final grades, you can make a transcript to send to them. If you send a transcript along with a copy of your diploma, showing you really did graduate, they might accept that. Surely they’ve run into the situation before, as I understand a fair number of private schools don’t assign grades or have transcripts. By meeting “homeschool” type requirements, you should be able to get in.

When you make your transcript, just be sure to include your name, address, school name, and year of graduation. The year of graduation is one of the most critical things to have on your transcript. :D

When you say the school doesn’t do transcripts, maybe they don’t have a formal form, but can you make up a list of what you studied as suggested above and get the school principal or director or whoever to sign it? That is all a transcript is after all, a list of studies completed, grades if any assigned, and a signature from a school official.

I think I will try the “homeschooled” route. I finished school twenty-three years ago and it’s a bit hard to remember how I did in everything, but I will try. The school does not have grading like regular school, but I will do my best to match them. I cannot find my past IEPs from the first and last year I attended there (I have moved twice) so I will have to go by memory.
I will see if I can get the director to sign the transcript. If not him, I will ask the director of the last program I was in who I am still in correspondence with.

I have a couple more questions.
Last Spring I tried to get my school records (or at least get copies of them) from my sending district by writing to the present Principal. (When you graduate from this private special ed school it sends your records to the sending school district and you get your high school diploma from the school you would have attended.) To make a long story short, I got a run-around. He said he was not sure, would look into it, and get back to me. He never did. I even followed up with another email in May to find out the status of him finding out the answer to my question, but no response. What gets me is that this man said he did not know what to do, which is ridiculous because his predesessor (sp?) did and the schools in NJ all still use this system. If my records have been destroyed, you would think he could tell me.
I’m wondering if the stigma of my school has reared its head again. A lot of people have the wrong idea about the school I went to and many graduates receive prejudice because of it.

My questions are: Should I contact this man again, and if I do, what can I say so that I don’t come across as rude or abusive? I tend to put my foot in my mouth sometimes.
Should I go over his head and contact the Supertendent of schools to find out about my records? Or, should I forget the whole thing?

I regret not asking for my records when I graduated. It would have avoided this mess.

I am not sure of the format of what a transcript would look like. I have never seen one.

I have a bunch of transcripts from various educational institutions. My neighbour scanned them a while ago and as soon as I look up the files it would be easy to send you a couple; for safety over the internet I just have to figure how to erase anything too easy to identify. YOu could porbably Google “transcript” - and click on “images” and get some pictures.

You could probably create something that looked so much like a transcript on your word processor that they wouldn’t look further, though I would carefully label it as a reconstruction so it didn’t end up being interpreted as fraud.

Colleges have gotten better accustomed to dealing with “returning” (after a decade or two) students and figuring out where to place them. I’d ask to talk to an advisor at the college who specializes in returning or “nontraditional” students (most college have one, even if not formally). It would be even better to meet him/her face to face.

I didn’t find too much on Google as far as photos of transcripts go. I did find a few services that do up transcripts for homeschoolers. I have a question about that, but I will put it in another thread.

That’s a good transcript that you referred me to, Sandy. I will have to add a year to the transcript for my fifth (co-op) year.
