Hi!
We are trying to develop a new functional language arts program for our students who will not be able to pass the SOL’s required for either a standard or modified diploma (Virginia). All of the students have significant weaknesses, and many of them test below the 1st percentile on the WJ-III.
Do you happen to know of any curriculum that will assist us in working with these students, whose reading and writing skills range from the 1st - 10th percentile? Keep in mind that some of these students may receive this instruction for all 4 years, since they are unable to take “regular” English 9, 10, 11, or 12. (Students are already enrolled in a Wilson reading class.)
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
CL
Re: Help with curriculum question
If they’re already doing Wilson for the “decoding” part of reading, then I would look for other things for the “functional” part. These are students who would benefit more from explicit instruction and lots of practice in when and how to *use* what they know. I would contact organizations like ARC (Association for Retarded Citizens) just to get a wider range of what’s out there in job and life skills, and then adapt ideas to fit the individual students.
I would look at some of the SRA Direct Instruction programs. If you were not already using Wilson, you could use Corrective Reading along with Reasoning and Writing or Expressive Writing, Spelling Mastery and Spelling Through Morphographs, and Corrective Math.
