Suspension

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am a teacher and a parent. Last week I sent 3 boys to the office for throwing dirt bombs. One of the boys was my own son (who is served in Sp. Ed. for having ADHD). I did not ok for him to get swats. The Asst. Princ. suspended him for 1 whole day. The other boys received swats. Her discipline is not consistent as other kids who have had the same infraction either get the swats or pick up trash or get a “slap on the hand”. This was my son’s first infraction and he gets suspension.

We live in a small town so it’s not hard to know what’s going on at school. Out of the entire elementary school in the grades 1st-4th, my son is the only who has been suspended this school year. Is this discrimination? My problem is that her punishments are not consistent. I’d appreciate some insight and input. Thanks a million.

Sometimes when it’s a faculty child, administrators get extra hard. They don’t want anyone to yell “favoritism”. So, yes, your son may have been discriminated against in that way. When it’s a faculty child, everyone’s watching and waiting to yell ‘favoritism’.

Yes, Sara it was really discrimination in that regard. My son is serviced under Special Education “OHI” for ADHD. Administrators need to be extra careful because children who are serviced under Sp. Ed. must be disciplined to the extent “that the discipline is consistent with children without disabilities”. I could take them to court on this issue so says an attorney. Anyone out there beware!
